It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 5/8/17

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

The Book Diet

I know it’s unhealthy to stick to a strict diet (nutritional or otherwise), but I have to do something. There’s only so much space in my house (and money in my account!) Since May 1 I’ve managed to control my purchasing for 5 out of 7 days.

I deserve a reward. I’m thinking a book from my wish list…

Last week I read and heard…

Say Goodbye for Now

This was the April (!) selection for Once Upon a Book Club. Yes, I realize it’s May and yes, I’ve already received the May selection. I guess I’ll be reading that one in June.

13 Reasons Why

All my students have been talking about is the Netflix series. So like any good teacher who wants to connect with the students I decided I needed to check it out. Since I’m all about encouraging them to read, I told them I was going to read the book instead of watching the show. Many of them didn’t even know there was a book *sob*.

I.hated.this. All I’m going to say is the adult at the end. No wonder mental healthcare workers are upset. I’m “just” a teacher and I am livid. Way to send a terrible message.

The Conquest of the Americas (The Great Courses)

Uy. Audiobooks. I can’t quite get consistent with them. I listened to two Carol Burnett memoirs with no problems. I thoroughly enjoyed a Great Course Lecture series by John McWhorter. But this one….Oy. I was listening on two different devices and at some point it didn’t sync or maybe I misread the notification and didn’t realize I was agreeing to going back four lectures, but it went back four lectures and I barely even remembered having listening to them before. That can’t be a good sign.

I’m currently reading

Alma

Romance in Spanish. I’m a lazy reader in two languages. I don’t want to have to work to hard when I read, so I avoid high literature in English AND Spanish.

The Hate U Give

I did a last-minute read for the April BuddyRead on Litsy. I do not want to do that again so I’m trying to get a head start.

I’m currently Listening to…

Brain Rules

So. Much. Science. I’m not doing much better with this audiobook either.

Me Talk Pretty One Day

Aha! This one has me! I checked it out from the library on Hoopla. It’s hilarious at times (like laugh so hard I think I’m going to puke) and dark at other times. But…

I hate the platform. I wish I had it on Audible. This is my first try with Hoopla audio and um…I don’t see what all the “hoopla” is about (*snerk* excuse me while I laugh at my own corny joke. It’s a teacher thing.) Sooo….anyhoo. I don’t like Hoopla. I can’t play back more than 1.5x the speed and when I do anything above 1x it has a weird tinny echo. This is not a huge issue, but I can’t see tracks or times. Just the time on the whole book overall. And I must be falling right into Audible’s gamification trap because the only thing I can think about is (are?) the minutes I’m NOT racking up while I listen.

I’ve been told OverDrive is better. If this title had been available I would have switched in a heartbeat. I might give audiobooks from the library one more try using OverDrive.

What I’m Watching

Oh yes. There is TV at my house.

My husband and I watched season 3 of Bosch on Amazon prime. Now we are done. And we are sad.

I watch telenovelas and Spanish language television. There. I said it. I probably need some sort of professional help. I catch hell for my telenovela watching, but I don’t care. Supposedly there are higher quality ways to keep up with one’s Spanish, but see “lazy” above. The Spanish is easier on a telenovela. Not to mention the escapism factor. News is depressing no matter what language it’s in.

This week El Bienamado started on Unimás. I’m watching 456,000 other shows that I probably don’t have time for but that is not stopping me from adding another show into the mix.  La Querida del Centauro Season 2 also started the week and I at least managed to record the episodes. I haven’t gotten around to watching any of them though.

I have to plan around my husband. He’ll sit and watch a few of them (like La Colombiana), but he refuses to watch anything involving music (Like Guerra de Ídolos or La Reina de la Canción.) My husband is kind of captive audience. We have this cat who DEMANDS lap time every evening (the cat will stand at the door to my husband’s study and whine until he comes out and sits on the couch.) So I try to watch shows he can at least stomach (my husband, not the cat.)

So um. Yeah. Boring life.

In the kitchen

The first thing anyone needs to know about me is that I am lazy to the core (Wait, I’ve already mentioned that multiple times, haven’t I) I hate going out. I am pretty much a work and then go home kind of gal. I hate going anywhere. That includes the grocery store.

My daughter recently tried some meal delivery services. I like food. I’m lazy. I’m a lemming. Hell yes I’ll try it!

So I’ve decided to try Home Chef, Plated, Hello Fresh and Blue Apron. We’re thinking of maybe choosing two and rotating each week.

This week Hello Fresh got eliminated after one too many meals with feta. Plated is still in the running after an amazing Ginger Miso Quinoa bowls with roasted veggies saved them. The Pine Nut Crusted Salmon was nothing to write home about. We’ve had two Home Chef deliveries and every single dish was great so they pretty much have the top spot.

Aside from not having to dress and go out, I really, really like that there are no wasted leftovers. The recipes are easy enough that I actually feel competent in the kitchen, which is nice. My reputation as a culinary disaster is well-known in some circles.

On the needles

There was a time when I was Madame f*ing Defarge. I’m pretty sure I burned myself out during the Ravellenic Games of 2012. Now that I’m trying to add audio books to my repertoire, I’ve decided to pick the needles back up. The only problem is I can’t really knit anything too complicated (not that I would anyway.) I’ve made a couple of dish cloths which was nice, mindless knitting. A colleague is expecting in September and my go to baby blanket is the Prairie Blanket by Annie Dempsey. I’ve been working on that usually on the weekends.

So…that’s my week. Dull as mud I’m afraid.

  1. For a boring week, you got a lot done. I’m not a fan of audiobooks because I don’t concentrate as well as when there are words in front of my eyes. I’m also a lazy reader in that I never choose books advertised as “literary.” I love my genre reading. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. I have a hard time with audiobooks as well. It has to be really good or I just start drifting in and out of attention.

I struggle with “literary” as well. They tend to be a little heavier subject matter. I prefer my entertainment a little lighter.

  2. My son and I sometimes watch telenovelas together. They’re a great way to practice Spanish. If you want something different to watch, Netflix has Legend Quest — a Mexican cartoon. Switch it to be original Spanish language track (the voice acting in English isn’t so good).
It was another busy week but I did manage to finish some books. Come see what I’m reading.
